Understand how early or late your brand appears in AI-generated answers.

What is Position?

Position measures where your brand is mentioned within an AI-generated answer. Palagus assigns every brand mention a score between 0 and 10: 10 = At the beginning of the answer 0 = At the end of the answer A higher score means that the brand tends to appear earlier. A lower score means that it appears closer to the end. Position measures the textual placement of a brand. It does not represent its position within a numbered recommendation list.

How Position is calculated

Palagus calculates Position across three levels:

1. Position within an answer

Palagus determines the relative word position of every brand mention. First word = 10 Middle of the answer = approximately 5 Last word = 0 The score is normalized based on the total length of the answer. This makes the Position of brands in answers of different lengths comparable.

2. Repeated mentions

If a brand appears multiple times in the same answer, Palagus calculates the average Position of all occurrences. For example: First mention: 9.0 Second mention: 6.0 Third mention: 3.0 Answer Position: 6.0

3. Multiple answers and prompts

If multiple answers exist for one prompt, Palagus calculates the average of their Position scores. The overall Position is then calculated as the average across all included prompts. Brand occurrences → Answer average → Prompt average → Brand average

What happens when a brand is not mentioned?

Palagus only calculates a Position when the selected brand appears in an answer. A missing brand mention is not treated as a Position of 0. Position 0 = Brand appears at the end No Position = Brand does not appear Answers without a brand mention are excluded from the Position calculation. Their absence is reflected in Visibility instead.

Example

A brand appears in three answers for the same prompt: Answer 1: 8.0 Answer 2: 6.0 Answer 3: 4.0 The Position for the prompt is: (8.0 + 6.0 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 6.0 If the selected analysis contains several prompts, Palagus calculates the average of their prompt-level scores.

How to interpret Position

A higher Position indicates that the brand is introduced earlier in AI-generated answers. You can analyze Position by:
  • Persona
  • Topic
  • Prompt
  • AI model
  • Time period
For example: Your brand: 7.4 Competitor A: 8.1 Competitor B: 5.2 In this example, Competitor A tends to appear earlier than your brand. An earlier Position does not automatically mean that a brand is recommended or described positively. Review Position together with Visibility, Share of Voice, Sentiment, and the underlying AI response.

Position vs. other metrics

  • Visibility measures how often the brand appears.
  • Share of Voice measures the brand’s share of all tracked brand mentions.
  • Sentiment measures how the brand is described.
  • Position measures where the brand appears in the answer.

Frequently asked questions
